What is AI in recruitment? 

AI in recruitment refers to the use of artificial intelligence technologies to automate and enhance various aspects of the hiring process, such as candidate sourcing, screening, and engagement.

AI tools can offer many benefits. Some ways recruitment businesses are already using AI is to:

Is AI the same as automation?

Though there are some similarities, automation and AI are different. This article gives an overview of automation and AI and explores the impact and potential in the recruitment industry.

Is AI expensive to implement? 

The cost of implementing AI can vary depending on the solutions you choose. There are both affordable and more extensive options available, so it's important to assess your business needs and budget. 

You may also already be paying for AI tools and not realise. Have you checked if your CRM and/or ATS provide is rolling out AI features? Do you already pay for the Microsoft or Google suites? It is worth taking a look at your current tech stack to see if there are any AI tools already available to you.  

Remember, do not put any sensitive or confidential information into free, OpenAI tools.

Will AI replace human recruiters? 

No. 

AI can offer benefits when it comes to handing repetitive tasks, giving recruiters time back to focus on the more strategic and interpersonal aspects of hiring. But the expert, human-touch is more important than ever.

The first step in any technology change project is to clearly identify what your business needs, before jumping ahead to the type of tool.

How can I ensure AI is used ethically in recruitment? 

To use AI ethically, ensure transparency in how AI tools are used, regularly audit AI systems for biases, and maintain human oversight in decision-making processes. Dive into the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology’s Ethics, Transparency and Accountability Framework for more. 

Can AI improve diversity and inclusion in hiring? 

Yes, AI can help reduce unconscious bias by focusing on objective criteria and providing a more standardised evaluation process, but it's crucial to regularly review and adjust AI systems to ensure fairness. 

But AI learns from data. So, where bias has existed in the historical data, the AI will learn and even amplify this.  

You should also consider the criteria you are giving to the AI tool. Remember, under the Equality Act it is illegal to set rules or practices that unfairly disadvantage workers or job applicants with protected characteristics (like race, gender, age, etc.) compared to those without these characteristics.
