Leaving a comfortable life in Nigeria behind, Ikenna moved to the UK to follow his dream of becoming a Hollywood screenwriter. To support his dream, and whilst he completes his Masters in screenwriting, Ikenna works through an agency as a cleaner at a London university. This provides him with the funds and flexibility he needs.

When Jan was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2016, she knew continuing to work full time in her permanent role as a project manager was no longer feasible. A temporary role in recruitment enabled Jan to return to work, using her extensive skills and experience whilst managing her health condition and allowing her to spend time with her aunt with Alzheimer’s.

Clare is a radiographer but after 18 years in permanent employment she became disillusioned with the system. Temp work as a locum gives her the opportunity to use the breadth of her expertise to its fullest. Whilst providing vital resource to the NHS, Clare also has the flexibility needed to run her own radiography training business which is training the next generation.

Our manifesto sets out four key themes, supplemented by recommendations aimed at supporting policymakers better understand the role of the labour market, and how it underpins economic success.

The current suite of employment legislation just isn't reflective of modern working practices, and updating some key pieces of regulation would provide a crucial boost to the UK labour market. Many of the regulations need updating to be more inclusive of different forms of work, like agency work, and to better protect people and their employers in how we work today and to futureproof us in work.​
