The severity of labour and skills shortages is well evidenced. But the REC's latest report ‘Overcoming Shortages: How to create a sustainable labour market’, looks at what the economic impact of these shortages is and suggests solutions to overcome them in order to create a sustainable labour market.

Published on 18 July 2022, the report found that the UK economy could lose up to £39bn a year from 2024, the equivalent of almost the entire defence budget or two Elizabeth lines, if we don’t address labour and skills shortages. Policy makers need to be looking at issues ranging from devolving skills policies and reforming the apprenticeship levy, to creating an immigration system that can flex to labour market needs.
