Neeti Gupta is the Managing Director at BD Consult Limited and has been an REC Council Director for the Institute of Recruitment Professionals for the last 6 years. We asked her about the importance of the REC Council, the upcoming elections and her advice to members who are thinking of getting involved.

What does being an REC Council Director involve?

The REC has two types of memberships, a corporate membership for recruitment agencies and individual membership for individual recruitment professionals through IRP. The IRP Director is more aligned to the individual membership which have currently about 11000 members. Being a Council Director for the IRP involves championing recruitment by representing, developing, educating, qualifying and supporting the careers of the IRP members throughout the recruitment industry.

What is expected from a Director in terms of time commitment and skills?

In terms of skills, I think the most important one is to exercise independent judgement.

You need to be able to look at an issue from your perspective rather than from somebody else's. You must have a very independent, precise and concise judgment as well as being able to talk about the future strategy of the recruitment industry.

In terms of time commitment I would like to think you can give as little or as much as you want to, but typically it’s about half a day per month.

Which are the qualities of a good Director?

Again, probably the most important quality is to exercise independent judgment.

You need to be very aware of what you are getting into and not be biased towards offering advice that suits the organisation – rather, it should be about what you think is right for the industry and the business.

Do you think that being part of the REC Council add value to your professional career?

Absolutely yes. It’s a great form of personal development, it’s about showcasing yourself as somebody who can take on the responsibility. It also let’s my clients know that when they deal with my buisness, they are working with someone who really cares about the recruitment industry and upholds the standards and values that the REC represents.

Why is the REC Council important?

The REC Council helps shape the future of the recruitment industry. Things like Artificial Intelligence and robotics are changing people’s career choices and the traditional careers are no longer the way they were a couple of years ago. The REC needs to think about what support the industry will need in a couple of years from now, and the Council plays a really important role in helping the organisation think ahead on plan for the future.

Nominations for the REC Council elections are now open. The deadline for nominations is Monday, 13 May 2019 at 12:00 noon. You can read more about the nomination criteria and director responsibilities here
