The perfect match? Why a career in recruitment could be for you
Advice for employers
The Youth Voice Census is an annual survey conducted by Youth Employment UK (YEUK); it is the
largest survey of young people in the UK. The latest data and feedback provides great insight into how young people feel about work and future careers. It also shines a light on how working within the recruitment industry can provide rewarding career opportunities as well as an exciting early step into the world of work.
Here is a recap of the messages and findings from the latest edition of the Youth Voice Census; and an overview of how this links back to careers within the recruitment sector:
-
Over 55% of young people in education said their learning opportunities had been disrupted. The Covid-lag persists but the good news is that successful careers in recruitment are also built on mindset and attitude. rather than just academic excellence alone!
-
Only 12.4% of young people think quality work opportunities are available where they live. And nearly 50% are not confident that they will be able to progress into a good job. More good news is that there are recruitment firms in practically every town and city, with over 30,000 businesses across the UK specialising in recruitment and related services1.
-
1 in 3 young people who are now in work say they are struggling and feel unprepared. The recruitment sector is increasingly focused on creating inclusive and welcoming workplaces where young people can thrive and grow.
-
Young people say that what they are looking for is work that is flexible, rewarding, and gives them a sense of purpose. Recruitment ticks all these boxes; what greater purpose than helping people to find the right job!
-
Other major ‘pull’ factors flagged by respondents to this year’s Youth Voice Census include opportunities to learn and progress, and the positive social aspect of working alongside friendly colleagues. The development of dynamic ‘career pathways’ is at the heart of attracting and retaining new people in the sector. And it’s fair to say that a vibrant social scene has always been a strong facet!
According to LinkedIn’s ‘Jobs on the Rise’ list, the role of recruiter has been one of the fastest growing job titles in the UK over the past five years. The recruitment sector, and related industries, already employs over 200,000 people in the UK2; we can expect a new generation to continue bolstering the recruitment ranks over the coming years!
