WaterAid's history stretches back to 1981, when on 21 July we were officially established as a charitable trust. In the last 30 years, we have gone from strength to strength to become one of the most respected organisations dealing solely with water, sanitation and hygiene issues.
Our vision is a world where everyone has access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. Our mission is to transform lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in the world’s poorest communities. We work with partners and influence decision-makers to maximise our impact.
While one billion people have been lifted out of poverty in the last 20 years, 10 per cent of the world’s population still live without safe water to drink and one in three people live without a decent toilet. As a result 500,000 children die every year from diseases caused by lack of safe water, sanitation and hygiene.
With the recent launch of our exciting new Global Strategy, we will strengthen our partnerships and alliances over the next five years, with a focus on achieving a common goal: reaching everyone, everywhere with safe water, sanitation and hygiene by 2030.
